(PRESS RELEASE)
Dare County Arts Council and Cucalorus announce a call for entries for the seventh annual Surfalorus Film Festival being held September 20-22, 2018 on the Outer Banks.
The free, family-friendly event will feature international, regional and local surf film screenings at various venues on the Outer Banks. Surfalorus screenings will be held at Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head (Thursday, September 20), Dare County Arts Council in Manteo (Friday, September 21), and the Outer Banks Brewing Station in Kill Devil Hills (Saturday, September 22). Doors will open at 6:30pm and screenings will start at 7pm.
New to the mix this year, awards will be presented at the screenings for Best Short Film, Best Feature Film, People’s Choice/Audience Award, Best Wave, Best Wipeout, Best Soundtrack and Lifetime Achievement.
Dan Brawley, Chief Instigating Officer at Cucalorus, shared, “We’re more excited than ever about how Surfalorus is lining up with the Easterns and exploring ways to weave together the fun of being on the beach during a competition with the discovery of watching the year’s best surf films. When you add our new lifetime achievement award, recognizing a photographer or filmmaker who has had a major impact on surf culture, this year’s Surfalorus should really be special and different.”
Filmmakers of all kinds can enter their original short and feature film submissions through Cucalorus.org. If your film contains surfing, water sports, or ocean adventures of any kind – please send it our way. Submissions from first-timers as well as salty veterans are encouraged. Submission is free and the deadline is July 1 at midnight. Contact programming@cucalorus.org for more information about submissions.
Another new twist this year, Surfalorus will feature booths from the region’s most talented surf artisans exhibiting their works, including surf resin jewelry, ocean paintings, surf photography, local surfboard shapers and more.
“Our local and regional artists are constantly being inspired by the ocean, whether they are painting the perfect wave or shaping a new surfboard for someone to ride that perfect wave,” said Dare County Arts Council Executive Director Chris Sawin. “Surfalorus presents a great opportunity to spotlight some of our area’s surf-inspired artists and display their creative process.”
Along with a variety of eclectic surf films, Surfalorus will also feature live music, pop-up performances, and a surfboard exhibit that tells the history of shaping curated by Steve Wise.
“We will display the evolution of the surfboard, wooden boards through the multi-fin boards we’re riding today, as well as the different materials used to produce them,” said curator Steve Wise.
Surfalorus is a premier collaboration between Dare County Arts Council and Wilmington, NC-based Cucalorus Festival, which will celebrate its 24th anniversary this fall.
