Colington, NC Real Estate

Colington is an island, actually two islands, on the west side of Kill Devil Hills that you have probably never heard of. For most visitors, Colington Road is just one of many cross streets on the bypass. But drive past the Memorial and the First Flight schools, and this twisty curvy road will lead you to a wonderful secret hideaway. After crossing the first bridge over Colington Creek, you are on Little Colington Island. You might want to stop into Billy’s Seafood for right-off-the-boat fresh oysters, fish, blue crabs, clams or shrimp, in-season only of course. Watersedge is a newer community with a few waterfront homes and a community boat launch and docks. Colington Pointe has both townhomes and single-family homes, with a great clubhouse and community pool, as well as a boat launch.

Cross the second bridge over Colington Cut and you are on Big Colington Island. Wave to the local kids fishing for their supper and turn down Schoolhouse Road at the fire station. Back here are two communities many locals don’t even know about: the Cliffs of Colington and Swan View Shores. Both offer large wooded lots and a few lucky soundfront homes. Past the fire station, Williams Road leads to Baycliff, with its beautiful clubhouse, large pool, pier and boat launch. Both Baycliff and the Cliffs of Colington have high elevations, including some homes in the X flood zone.

The largest neighborhood on Colington is Colington Harbour, a gated community with a good mix of year-round and second homes, as well as some vacation rentals. The Harbour has a clubhouse, pool and playground, but is most known for the deep water canals that extend throughout the community. Sailors meet in the harbor every Wednesday for a friendly race to the first channel marker and back, and every December the Colington Harbour Yacht Club hosts the parade of boats, all strung with Christmas lights. Homes in Colington Harbour range from gorgeous soundfront estates to modest beach boxes on the interior lots. Many homes on the canals are quite affordable, with some dating back to the 70s and 80s.

There is no post office in Colington, so your mail is addressed to Kill Devil Hills, even though it is not part of the town. This also means no town taxes to pay, although there is a separate assessment for the fire department and trash pickup from Dare County. One thing all Colington homeowners agree on is that you feel miles away from the hustle and bustle of the beach!
